A STUDY ON LIFE STRESS AND LONELINESS OF AGED PEOPLE IN CHATTOGRAM DISTRICT

AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate whether there is any relation between life stress and loneliness of aged people as a function of old age, gender and living condition. This study was conducted on 120 respondents aged from 60 to 85 years purposively selected from different areas of Chattogram district. They were categorized into groups on the basis of old age, gender and living conditions. The Bangla version of life stress scale and loneliness scale were used to measure life stress and loneliness of aged people. The findings of the present study revealed that aged people whose age above 70 showed more stress than people of 60-69 years (F = 25.52, df = 1,112 , p < 0.001); male aged people were more stressed than female aged people (F = 16.26, df = 1,108, p < 0.001); but living condition has no significant effect on stress. On the other hand, aged people whose ages ware above 70 showed more loneliness than the people with the age of 60-69 years (F = 18.83, df = 1,112,p < 0.001); male aged people were more lonely than female aged people (F = 4.19, df = 1,108, p < 0.04); but living condition had no significant effect on loneliness. A significant interaction effect was found between old age and gender (F = 6.56, df = (1, 112), p< 0.01) according to loneliness. Finally, findings also revealed significant positive correlation (r = 0.71, p < 0.01) between stress and loneliness.
