SOCIAL NETWORKING ADDICTION SCALE: EXPLORING PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES IN BANGLADESH CONTEXT

AbstractAlthough social networking usage improves peoples’ lives by developing communication opportunities, extreme use gives an expanding ascend to problematic behaviors or addiction, which is reported in many countries including Bangladesh. To measure this addiction, the Social Networking Addiction Scale (SNAS; Shahnawaz & Rehman, 2020) has been developed and used in different cultures but yet to be adapted in Bangladesh context. The present study aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the SNAS in Bangladeshi culture. A total of 173 university students were recruited and filled up the Bangla version of SNAS and the translated version of “Oxford Happiness Scale”. To explore construct validity, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied along with the determination of internal consistency, reliability, and divergent validity. The CFA model, revealed an acceptable overall model fit with a six factor solution. Thus, the factor structure of the Bangla SNAS replicated the original study. The Bangla SNAS also showed strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha=0.94) and satisfactory convergent and divergent validity. Altogether, the SNAS is a psychometrically sound measure for assessing social networking addictive behaviors in Bangladeshi young adults.
