A CHECK LIST AND ABUNDANCE OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN RAMSAGARDIGHI, DINAJPUR, BANGLADESH

AbstractPhytoplankton is a micro-organism which acts as a natural source of foods for fish and other aquatic organisms in the water. It is not only as primary producer in food chain but also one of the parameters for fertility level of the water. This study was conducted to determine the abundance of phytoplankton in Ramsagardighi, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. The study was carried out from May 2011 to March 2012. Result showed that the study area pertained a total of 48 species of phytoplankton belonging to 36 genera among which Chlorophyceae was dominant group with 13 genera and 15 species. The dominancy and abundance of phytoplankton is followed by Cyanophyceae with 10 genera and 10 species and Bacillariophyceae with 6 genera and 10 species and Euglenophyceae with 3genera and 9 species and Dinophyceae with 3 genera and 3 species as well as Xanthophyceae with 1 genera and 1species. The phytoplanktonic peak was recorded in the month of July, 2011 and the least one was observed during the month of March, 2012.
