A CHECKLIST OF BIRDS OF PADMA RIVER AND CHARLANDS OF CHAPAI NAWABGONJ AND RAJSHAHI DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

Abstract

The Ganges river enters in Bangladesh from West Bengal, India in district of Chapai Nawabgonj and flowing through Rajshahi district named as Padma river. Bird watching have done since 2005 at the Padma river and charland at Bkhor Ali, Chapai Nawabgonj and near Rajshahi district. During the study period a total 279 species of birds of 14 orders, 50 families and 161 genera from the Padma river and charlands were recorded. Among the recorded birds 183(65.59%) species were non-passerine, 96(34.41%) species were passerine, 32(11.47%) were raptors and 109(39.07%) were waterbirds. The status of the recorded birds were resident 132(47.31%), migratory 126(45.16%) and vagrant 21(7.53%). According to Red List Database (IUCN, 2015) the status of these birds were Vulnerable 9, Neat Threatened 15, Endangered 5, Critically Endangered 5 and Data Deficient 11. Five Pelagic birds i.e. Short-tailed Shearwater, Wilson’s Storm-petrel, Long-tailed Skua, Bridled Tern and Sooty Tern were also recorded in Padma river.
