Abstract

: Species of freshwater prawn genus Macrobrachium under the family Palaemonidae are distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Some species of genus Macrobrachium are locally important for economic value in Bangladesh. A detailed analysis on the availability of information pertaining to the knowledge on freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium spp.) of Bangladesh are found in most freshwater areas such as rivers, beels, and ponds. In the present investigation a checklist prepared of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium found in Kurigram district of Bangladesh. The identified Macrobrachium species were M. palaemonoides, M. lanchesteri, M. dolichodactylus, M. equidens, M. lamarrei, M. Idella, M. rosenbergii and M. lar. For identification morphological characteristics i.e., body color, number of chelae, rostrum shape, rostrum teeth, abdominal shape, segments size of walking legs and morphometric characteristics i.e. Total length (TL), Rostrum length (RL), Cephalothorax length (CL), Cephalothorax height (CH), Second pleon segment height (SSH), Sixth pleon segment length (SISL), Telson length (TeL) and Telson width (TeW) were observed. DNA sequencing is needed for more detail’s information of freshwater Palaemonid prawn in the waterbodies of Bangladesh.
