A NEW RECORD OF BLACK-SPOTTED GURNARD PTERYGOTRIGLA HEMISTICTA (TEMMINCK & SCHLEGEL, 1843) (SCORPAENIFORMES: TRIGLIDAE) FROM THE BAY OF BENGAL, BANGLADESH

AbstractA new record of gurnard fish, Pterygotrigla hemisticta (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843) has been confirmed from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Black pigment all over the inner surface of pectoral fin, intense black blotch near base bordered by a diagonal row of white spots, moderate snout, length 13-15% of standard length (SL) and 25 vertebrae are the key characters to identify this species from closely related species of the genus Pterygotrigla. The morphometric, meristic and DNA barcoding data thus confirmed the presence of P. hemisticta in Bangladesh. This report updates the geographical distribution for this species confirming its presence in the coastal region of Bangladesh, and thus extends the number of marine fishes known from the area.
