A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND SELF-ESTEEM OF CAREER WOMEN IN RAJSHAHI METROPOLITAN CITY

AbstractThe objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mental health and self-esteem of career women of Rajshahi Metropolitan City. For this purpose, Bangla version (Sarker & Rahaman, 1989) of Goldberg’s (1972) general health questionnaire and Bangal version (Ilyas, 2003) of self- esteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were administered on a randomly selected sample of 400 graduated women whose age ranged from 35 – 50 years and all had graduation degree. Results revealed that there was a significant positive correlation between mental health and self- esteem (r= 0.352, P˂0.01). Respondents were divided into two high and low self-esteem groups. Women who scored above 75 percent were included in high self-esteem group and who scored below 25 percent were grouped regarded as low self-esteem group. It was also found that women with higher self- esteem had better mental health than those with lower self-esteem. Results also revealed that mental health differed as a variation of profession (F= 5.592, P ˂0.01). Finally, some limitations of the study have been mentioned.
