AbstractThe present study was conducted to investigate whether achievement motivation of university students was related to their emotional intelligence and mental health. The study also investigated the gender differences in achievement motivation of the students. A total of 120 (60 males and 60 females) 1st year undergraduate students were selected purposively from different departments of Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. Instruments used in this research included: (1) Personal Information Form (PIF), (2) The Achievement Motivation Scale (Afsaruddin 1987), (3) Bangla version (Tushar 2013) of Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (Petrides and Furnham 2003) and (4) Bangla version (Ilyas and Ayesha 2001) of General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12, Goldberg 1972). Data were analyzed using correlation matrix, regression analysis and t-test. Results revealed that emotional intelligence and mental health of respondents were significantly associated with their achievement motivation. Regression analysis revealed significant independent effects of emotional intelligence and mental health on achievement motivation. Emotional intelligence and mental health created 35% variations in achievement motivation of the respondents. Results also revealed no significant gender differences in achievement motivation. These findings suggest the importance of students’ emotional intelligence and mental health in their achievement motivation.
