ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS AND POSSIBILITIES OF ROOFTOP GARDENING IN RAJSHAHI CITY, BANGLADESH

AbstractLiterature evidence indicates idea of gardening on the rooftop is an ancient rather than recent one, started from the beginning of the civilisation. Awareness on benefits of rooftop gardening in respect of environment and economy has been increased in developed countries, also drawn attention among the city dwellers of developing countries like Bangladesh. World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared Rajshahi is clean and healthy city which situated at the north-western part of Bangladesh. According to number of buildings and residents in the city, Rajshahi places after the capital city Dhaka, and metropolitan city Chittagong and Khulna, and also have huge opportunities of gardening on the lobby, balcony and roof, and can be source of food supply and fresh and healthy air. This study has taken an opportunity to discuss status, benefits and possibilities of rooftop gardening in Rajshahi City based on primary and secondary data analysis. The results indicate that though people of Rajshahi City practice rooftop gardening in a small scale but its economic and environmental benefits are significant especially enhancing food security, preserve biodiversity, maintaining thermal comfort, urban greenery and oxygen supply as well as aesthetic and mental refreshment. However, to scaling up the mentioned benefits as well as to build up a clean and healthy city, the study also recommends to develop awareness of stakeholders and to make policies and programs by the concern authorities.
