ANTIBACTERIAL POTENCY OF CRUDE EXTRACTS OF MIMOSA PUDICA L. LEAVES

AbstractThe present research was aimed to investigate the antibacterial activities of the crude extracts of leaves of Mimosa pudica L. against seven human pathogenic bacteria. Four solvents namely petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol were used. Among the seven bacterial strains, four gram negative i.e. Shigella boydii, Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi and three gram positive i.e. Bacillus cereus, Agrobacterium sp. Staphylococcus aureus were selected. The antibacterial potency was determined by following the agar disc diffusion method and the zones of inhibition were compared with the standard Ciprofloxacin 5µg/disc. Among the solvents chloroform extract showed the highest antibacterial efficacy against gram positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. While methanol extract showed the highest antibacterial efficacy against the gram negative bacteria Salmonella paratyphi and Shigella boydii which indicate the braod spectrum activity of the plant extracts. The susceptibility order of solvent extracts were chloroform>ethyl acetate>petroleum ether>methanol. The MIC values of chloroform extract were determined as 256 µg/ml against Salmonella paratyphi, 128 µg/ml against E. coli and Bacillus cereus and 64 µg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and that of ethyl acetate extract were 256 µg/ml against E. coli, 128 µg/ml against Salmonella paratyphi and Bacillus cereus and 64 µg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus.
