ANTIBACTERIAL POTENTIALS OF ABROMA AUGUSTA EXTRACTIVES

Abstract

The fresh fruit shell, leaves, root bark, root wood, stem bark, stem wood and  seeds of Abromaaugustawere tested for their antibacterial potentials against 6 Gram-positive and 8 Gram negative bacteria following agar diffusion technique. All the extracts offered activity against these bacteria. The fruit shell extract showed activity against Staphylococcusaureus, Bacillus cereus, Streptococcus -ß-haemolyticus, Salmonella typhi, Shigelladysenteriae, Shigellaboydiiand Escherichia coli;the leaf extract against S. aureus, B. cereus,  Bacillus. subtilis, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. typhi, S. dysenteriae, S. boydiiand E. coli ; the root bark extract against S. aureus, B. subtilis, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. typhi, S. dysenteriae, S. boydiiand E. coli ; the root wood extract against S. aureus, Sarcinalutea, S.- β –haemolyticus,S. dysenteriae,  S. boydiiand E. coli.; the  stem bark extract  against S. aureus, B. cereus, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. dysenteriae, Shigellasonnei,S. boydiiand E. coli ;the stem wood extract against S. aureus, B. subtilis, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. dysenteriae, S. boydiiand E. coli. The seed extract showed activity against S. aureus, B. megaterium,  S. lutea, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. dysenteriae, S. boydiiand E. coli. According to the intensity of the antibacterial activity against the selected bacteria, the  A. augusta extracts could be ranked root wood> stem bark >stem wood>root bark > leaf > fruit shell> seed extract. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the chloroform extracts of root wood were 64 μg/ml against S. – β – haemolyticus, 32 μg/ml against S. typhae, 128 μg/ml against B. cereus and the methanol extracts were 128μg/ml against B. cereus, 64 μg/ml against S. typhaeand 32 μg/ml against. S.-β –haemolyticusrespectively.
