ANTIBACTERIAL POTENTIALS OF GLYCOSMIS PENTAPHYLLA EXTRACTIVES

Abstract

: The fresh leaves, flower, root bark, root wood, stem bark and stem wood of G. pentaphylla were tested for their antibacterial potentials against 14 bacteria (6 Gram-positive and 8 Gram negative). All the extracts offered activity against these bacteria. The flower extract showed activity against S. aureus, B. cereus, B. megaterium, B. subtilis, S. lutea, S. typhi, S. shiga,

  1. boydii and Proteus sp.; The leaf extract against S. aureus, B. cereus, B. megaterium, B. subtilis, S. lutea, S.- β –haemolyticus,
  2. typhi, S. shiga, S. boydii and Proteus sp.; the root bark extract against S. aureus, B. cereus, B. megaterium, B. subtilis, S. lutea, S.- β –haemolyticus, S. typhi, S. shiga, and Proteus sp.; the root wood extract against S. aureus, B. megaterium, B. cereus,

.According to the intensity of activity against the selected bacteria the G. pentaphylla extracts could be arranged in a descending order of stem wood> flower> stem bark >root bark>root wood> leaf extract. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the chloroform extract of root wood were 64 μg/ml against S. – β – haemolyticus, 32μg/ml against S. typhae and 128 μg/ml against B. cereus and the leaf were 128 μg/ml against S. – β – haemolyticus, 32μg/ml against S. typhae and 64μg/ml against B. megaterium.
