AbstractThe abundance and diversity of insect fauna in crop fields on the riverbank of the Padma in Rajshahi District of Bangladesh were studied. The north side of the Padma River (Area A) and south side (Area B), adjacent to the Indian border at Yusufpur in Charghat Upazila, were sampled from March 2021 to February 2022. A total of 3759 individuals were recorded, including 2109 from Area A and 1650 from Area B under 32 families of eight orders. The total number of individuals and their relative abundance were presented order-wise as descending ranks: Lepidoptera (n= 1248, 33.20%) > Orthoptera (n= 687, 18.28%) > Coleoptera (n= 596, 15.86%) > Hymenoptera (n= 385, 10.24%) > Diptera (n= 383, 10.19%) > Hemiptera (n= 243, 6.46%) > Odonata (n= 138, 3.67%) > Heteroptera (n= 79, 2.10%). The most dominant order was Lepidoptera (n= 1248), and the least dominant order was Heteroptera (n= 79). The most dominant family was Muscidae (n= 151) and least dominant Miridae (n= 79). The lowest abundance (n= 538) was found in the winter season and reaches its maximum in monsoon (n= 1512). The diversity indices of Shannon (H’), Simpson (1-D) and Margalef (DMg) were 3.45, 0.96 and 3.76, respectively. Menhinick richness (DMn), Berger-Parker dominance (d) and Pielou’s evenness index (J’) were 0.521, 0.04 and 0.99, respectively. Insects are excellent bio-indicators, and a survey of their populations at regular intervals provide important biological information about the environmental condition of that area.
