ASSESSMENT OF PRODUCTION POTENTIALS AND CONSTRAINTS OF MANGO (MANGIFERA INDICA L.) CULTIVATION: A CASE STUDY ON SHIBGONJ UPAZILA OF CHAPAI NAWABGONJ DISTRICT

Abstract

Production potentials and constraints of mango cultivation were assessed at Shibgonj Upazila of Chapai Nawabgonj District. Data were collected using questionnaire survey and focus group discussion. Analysis of production system revealed that mango saplings are available in the study area. But most of the farmers do not use recommended practices of mango planting and spacing technique. Pond and tube well water are used for irrigation in mango cultivation. For grafting, generally the farmer use veneer grafting technique. The organic fertilizer applies in irregular basis and inorganic fertilizer applies in rare amount with irrigation. Moreover, mango producers are not proper aware for control mango pests and diseases and they follow the traditional method to produce mango. As it is generally alternate bearing and the plants take 4-5 years to bear fruits, the newly orchard area is used for intercrops, mainly rice and pulse crops for up to 6-7 years. Only input apply to the mango orchard is the application of insecticides when the tree starts bearing fruits. The orchard branch is so long and weak to support the fruit. Usually producers harvest the partially ripe mango. However in case of mango cultivation saplings, planting materials, labour, fertilizer, pesticides, insect and pest damages, and intercropping etc can influence the production of mango. Hence, this paper concludes some corrective measures to improve the production of mango. Besides, adoption of recommended cultivation practices would help the producers to increase the mango production.
