Abstract

The Kailashtila gas field (KGF) is located in the Sylhet basin, northeast Bangladesh. It is 17 km long and 5 km wide anticlinal structure with low relief and asymmetric in nature with steeper western flank (25°) and gentler eastern flank (11°). The gas reservoirs are entirely in sandstone of the Surma Group of Mio-Pliocene in age. Three main gas zones are identified in the field at depth ranging from 2280 to 3045 m below the surface. The gross pay sand thickness is 120 to 150 m, with estimated gas initially in place (GIIP) of the KGF is 3.657 Tcf with 69% recovery factor, thus recording an initial gas reserve 2.529 Tcf. Five gas producing wells (KTL 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) in KGF are producing 90.5 mmscf per day. Due to the demand of natural gas, this unconventional natural gas plays a vital role in the gross national economy of the country. Thus, unconventional natural gas in the KGF can also be recovered using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing stimulating methods at all the gas producing wells. Applying these techniques at the KGF will facilitate to recovery rate of natural gas from the reservoir more significantly.
