AbstractThe petroleum ether (PetE), chloroform (CHCl3) and methanol (MeOH) extracts of Phyllanthus niruri L. (whole plant) were assessed against the adults of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) for insecticidal and insect repellent activities and lethal activity against Artemia salina (L.) under laboratory conditions. The PetE extracts showed highest insecticidal activity by giving LD50 values of 3.174, 1.595, 1.233, 0.967 and 0.508mg cm-2, followed by the MeOH extracts where the LD50 values were 3.781, 3.541, 2.369, 1.983 and 1.783mgcm-2; and for the CHCl3 extracts the LD50 values were 5.585, 4.747, 4.747, 4.747 and 2.425mg cm-2 all for 1/2, 12, 24, 36 and 48h of exposure respectively. The intensity of insecticidal activity could be arranged in the descending order of PetE extract> MeOH extract> CHCl3 extracts. The same extracts of P. niruri offered significant repellent activity against the beetles of T. castaneum at 0.1%, 1% and 5% levels of significance (P<0.001; P<0.01 and P<0.05). The similar extracts responded through brine shrimp lethality assay and the CHCl3 extract was found most effective exhibiting the LC50 values of 279.418, 47.642, 19.551 and 4.883ppm; followed by the MeOH extracts where the LC50 values were 319.926, 105.408, 40.432 and 13.664ppm; and for the PetE extracts the LC50 values were 1875.87, 735.337, 354.759 and 251.033ppm; all for 12, 18, 24 and 30h of exposure, respectively. The intensity of brine shrimp lethality could be arranged in the descending order of CHCl3 extract> MeOH extract > PetE extract.
