AbstractPresent study was conducted to evaluate the chromosomal consequences in roots of some edible plants due to cytotoxic effect of waste water in the industrial area of Rajshahi city. From three different sites, a total of five edible plant species such as Colocasia esculenta, Xanthosoma atrovirens, Alocasia macrorrhizos, Ipomoea aquatica and Alternanthera philoxeroides were collected as they were the most dominant plant species in that area. Values of mitotic index, mitotic inhibition, nuclear volume, interphase chromosomal volume were calculated. In general the highest mitotic index was observed in control and the lowest one was in the nearest zone of the industrial area. The highest mitotic index was found in most of the expanded areas rather than control. The relationship of interphase chromosome volume showed linear relationship with the sites and they were mostly non-significant to each other. In quarter mile vicinity (site-1), these were found to be decreased respectively compared to that of site-1, although these values were lower than that of control. This study also reveals the chromosomal aberrations in the root tip cells of all the plant species. The different chromosomal aberrations were sticky chromosomes, laggard chromosomes, fragments, C-mitosis etc. which indicates the presence of certain cytotoxic/genotoxic substances in the study area.
