COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ORPHAN AND NON-ORPHAN CHILDREN ON SELF-ACCEPTANCE AND LIFE STRESS

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether self acceptance and life stress of orphan children differ from those of non orphan children. A total of 200 children were selected purposively from different areas of Chittagong. Of them, 100 were orphan and the rest of them were non-orphan children. Two Bengali-versed scales, namely, the Self-Acceptance Scale (Ilyas, 2001) which was originally developed by (Berger, 1952) and the ‘Life Stress Scale’ (Fahim, 2001) which was originally developed by (Cohen et al., 1991) were used to measure self- acceptance and life stress of respondents respectively. Comparisons were made between the two groups on self acceptance scores and life stress scores separately applying ‘t’ test. Results indicated that self acceptance scores were significantly higher for non orphan children than orphan children. On the other hand, life stress scores were significantly higher in orphan children than in non orphan children.
