CONSEQUENCES OF FLOOD ON HOUSEHOLD ECONOMY AND AGRICULTURE IN THE TEESTA FLOODPLAIN

AbstractFlood is a regular phenomena in the Teesta floodplain and a devastating flood appeared in the adjacent locality in 2017. It caused damage to agriculture and economy of the community inhabiting in the flooded area. The primary goal of the research is to identify the impacts of flood on the household economy. In particular, the existing study seeks to explore the economic loss of household goods along with damage in agricultural commodities and crops. Considering the flood proneness of Teesta floodplain the study has been conducted in the vicinity of Teesta river basin. Purposive sampling technique has been used to select the study locations. The study carried out a structured questionnaire survey in the study area to investigate the economic loss of the respondents owing to flood disaster. Simple Random Sampling (SRS) technique has been applied to select the households for conducting questionnaire survey and data collection. The sample size of the study is 381 out of 40542. Hence, the study finds out that Loss of standing crops; damage and loss of livestock, loss of trees or garden, loss of poultry are the very usual issues that the community of the Teesta floodplain experiences after each flood. The outcome of the study shows about 81.9% respondents suffered for loss of standing crops after 2017 floods. The result of the study also illustrates about 75.0% respondents lost livestock of less than 30000 BDT. The likelihood ratio of loss of livestock represents significant (p=.000) differences among households.The study recommends for community awareness to combat flood
