Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the reason behind the conversion of agricultural land especially for mango cultivation and its impacts of Charghat upazila in Bangladesh. Data on agricultural land conversion to orchard farming from 1995 to 2018 were collected from survey and secondary sources. In the study area, agricultural lands were decreasing gradually which were used mainly for different crop cultivation while orchard lands were increasing rapidly. As a result, crop production is decreasing day by day and significantly increasing orchard production. It was found that farmers were engaging to orchard due to its high productivity and draw quick profit, which invites adverse negative impact on crop land along its production. From the survey it was also found that farmers were willing to convert their crop land to orchard. Most of the respondent opinion is that a farmer can earn 60 thousand BDT from one (01) hectare of land for cultivation of normal crops, while within the same time period a farmer can earn approximately 3 to 4 lacs from orchard
