Abstract

Agricultural drought is the most severe slow-onset disaster and reoccurring phenomenon in the north-western part of Bangladesh. The present study explores the coping strategies by farmers to combat the adverse impacts of agricultural drought and its future perception in two drought-prone villages of Rajshahi district in the north-western Bangladesh. The primary data was collected in 2019 through a structured questionnaire survey which was conducted to 303 households out of 1421 households based on simple random sampling techniques using Yamane (1967) sampling formula. The study finds that agriculture of this area is repeatedly interrupted by recurrent drought events and for this situation, the farmers have already practiced an array of coping strategies to combat the adverse impacts of drought such as changes in crop varieties and production, cultivation of drought resistance crops, reserving rainwater, kitchen gardening, increasing of soil quality, changes in irrigation facilities and diversifying livelihoods. The present study also identifies the farmer’s perception on futuristic coping measures in respect of improving the early warning system, re-excavation of cannels and traditional ponds, tree plantation, technological support to the farmers, rising farmers awareness by expert, proper training and compensation to the farmers to ensure the sustainable agricultural development in the study villages of Bangladesh.
