Abstract

This paper investigates land-use changes of Manpura island of Bangladesh. Land erosion and accretion are the major factors often cause land-use changes. Land erosion is a product of regular shifting of river channels, besides sedimentation by land accretion. For detecting land-use changes, screen digitization techniques based on ERDAS Imagine software have been used in this research. The empirical findings confirm that about 1270 hectares of land have been reclaimed during 1973 to 2010 in Manpura. In addition, growths of human settlements and mangrove plantations are remarkable. At least 1349 hectares of land by human settlements and 1225 hectares of land by mangrove plantations have been occupied during the period of 37 years. Finally, the paper recommends a continuous land-use management for existence of Manpura Island, since its total area is decreasing after 1989.
