DOSE-MORTALITY AND REPELLENT ACTIVITY OF ANISOMELES INDICA (L.) KUNTZE LEAF EXTRACTS AGAINST THREE MAJOR STORED PRODUCT PESTS CALLOSOBRUCHUS CHINENSIS L., SITOPHILUS ORYZAE L. AND TRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM (HBST.) ADULTS

AbstractPetroleum ether (Pet. ether), CHCl3 and CH3OH extracts of Anisomeles indica L. leaves were subjected to dose-mortality and repellent activity tests against Callosobruchus chinensis L., Sitophilus oryzae L. and Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) adults under laboratory conditions. The dose-mortality assay for the Pet. ether extracts showed LD50 values 1.60, 0.86, 0.73, 0.56, 0.36, 0.24 and 0.16 mg/cm2 against C. chinensis;2.03, 1.27, 1.05, 0.97, 0.86, 0.83 and 0.74 mg/cm2 against S. oryzae and 3.60, 3.56, 2.78, 2.36, 2.19, 1.75 and 1.68 mg/cm2 against T. castaneum respectively all after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure. The CHCl3 extract showed LD50 values 8.08, 5.33, 5.15, 3.35, 2.77 and 2.12 mg/cm2 against C. chinensis after 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure and 8.61, 5.57, 2.98, 2.54, 2.35, 2.24 and 2.08 mg/cm2 against S. oryzae after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure respectively; and the CH3OH extract showed LD50 values 4.73, 4.43, 3.87, 2.45, 1.96, 1.66 and 1.29 mg/cm2 against C. chinensis; 2.74, 2.56, 2.51, 2.37, 2.32, 2.17 and 2.03 mg/cm2 against S. oryzae and 2.23, 1.90, 1.83, 1.66, 1.55, 1.40 and 1.37 mg/cm2 against T. castaneum respectively all after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure. However, the CHCl3 extract did not show mortality to the test beetle T. castaneum. According to the susceptibility of the beetles to the test extracts,the test agents could be arranged in the following descending order: C. chinensis>S. oryzae >T. castaneum; and according to the intensity of activity the extracts could be arranged in the descending order of Pet. ether >CH3OH > CHCl3. In repellency tests, only the Pet. ether and CH3OH extracts showed mild repellency both at 5% level of significance (P<0.05) against C. chinensis and S. oryzae respectively.
