AbstractNumber of spikelets, grains per spikelet and grain weight was found to vary in different zones of the spike in all the three crosses of hexaploid wheat. The genotype means for all the three characters were not found to increase progressively except some cases. The values at the base and apex of the ear were sometimes lower than that of the middle zones consistently. Grain number and grain weight were found to decrease unusually in the zones from centre towards the apex and base of the ear inspite of the involvement of tip sterile line (FM-147) in the crossing programs.
