EFFECT OF ANTIOXIDANT ON PESTICIDE INDUCED CYTOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES IN HEXAPLOID WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.)

Abstract

Antioxidants are compound that seem to reduce oxidative stress caused by pesticide. The present study was designed to investigate the protective role of antioxidants against pesticide induced toxicity in wheat seeds. The result of this study indicated that an increased concentration of pesticide increased mitotic abnormalities, interphase chromosome volume (ICV), and decreased the mitotic index (MI). However, both pre- and post-treatment with antioxidants resulted in a decreased mitotic abnormalities and interphase chromosome volume (ICV), while increasing mitotic index (MI). These results suggest that antioxidants exert an antagonistic effect against pesticide induced cytological consequences. Furthermore, the study also revealed that pre-treatment proved to be more showed more effective than post-treatment in mitigating these effects. So antioxidant treatment can be an effective weapon to protect plants in the field of pesticide induced toxicity.
