EFFECTS OF INSECTICIDE ON MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES OF RED BLOOD CELLS OF CHANNA PUNCTATUS (BLOCH)

Abstract

The effect of insecticide on morphological features Red Blood Cells (RBCs) of Channa punctatus (Bloch) was investigated. The insecticide, carbofuran produced detrimental effects on the morphology of Red Blood Cells of C. punctatus at 1, 5 and 10 ppm concentrations of the insecticide after 12, 24 and 48 h exposures. Morphological features of red blood cells were altered exhibiting different abnormal shapes. At 1 ppm concentration of Carbofuran red blood cells of C. punctatus showed swollen, spherical, lobopodial projections and shrinkage. Erythrocyte showed hole-like depressions, shrinkage and irregular boundary in the cell wall at 5 ppm concentration whereas projections, discocytes, keratocytes, fusiform and ultimately the oozing out of the cytoplasmic content were also observed at 10 ppm concentration of Carbofuran. The present study revealed that the aberrant morphological figures of red blood cells of C. punctatus were produced due to the induction of Carbofuran.
