Abstract

The study investigated the effects of dietary natural carotenoids on the growth, flesh quality, and palatability of an Indian major carp species, Cirrhinus cirrhosus. The experiment was conducted over a period of 90 days in 12 cages within a research pond at the Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Four experimental feeds were formulated including a control feed (CF) and three feeds supplemented with carotenoid sources, tomato (TEF), carrot (CEF), and a mix of both (TCEF) at 5% of the formulated feed. At the end of the experiment, the mean weight gain (MWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rate were calculated using standard formulae. Proximate composition (crude protein, lipid, carbohydrate, moisture, and ash content) of fish flesh was analyzed following AOAC methods, while palatability (flavor, taste, and texture) was assessed using organoleptic sensory evaluation. Fish fed the TCEF diet exhibited significantly higher MWG and SGR with an improved FCR, whereas the lowest values were recorded in CF. Proximate composition analysis revealed no significant differences among treatments. However, the palatability assessment showed a significant higher total organoleptic score in TCEF compared to CF. The research concluded that supplementation with a mix of tomato and carrot powder (2.5% + 2.5%) in feed is effectively enhances the growth and palatability of C. cirrhosus.
