Abstract

A trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin-E enriched feed on growth, flesh quality and palatability of Labeo rohita, as vitamin-E enhance the growth and health condition of fish. The trial was carried out in 12 cages that set in the pond at the Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh for 3 months under four treatments viz. T0, T1, T2 and T3 where, T0 treated as fish group fed feed without Vitamin-E (Control) and T1, T2 and T3 treated as fish groups fed feed with Vitamin-E at the rate of 100, 200, 300 mg/kg of feed, respectively. In this trial, growth and feed utilization parameters (Mean weight gain, SGR, survival rate and FCR), carcass composition (Crude protein, crude lipid, carbohydrate, moisture and ash) and palatability indicators (odour, taste and texture) of the fish were measured according to standard methods. Significantly higher mean weight gain, SGR and lower FCR were found in the fish group fed feed with 100 mg Vitamin-E/kg feed. There was no significant difference in survival rate. Significantly higher percentage of carcass crude protein and lipid were estimated in the fish fed feed with vitamin-E at 200 mg/kg feed. The study showed no significant effect of dietary vitamin-E inclusion on palatability indicators but relatively higher scores of these indicators were obtained in the fish fed feed with vitamin-E at 200 mg/kg feed. The study indicates 100 mg vitamin-E/kg inclusion in the feed for better growth whereas 200 mg vitamin-E/kg for better carcass and palatability of the flesh of L. rohita.
