AbstractA study was conducted to investigate the effects of vitamin-C enriched feed on the growth, flesh compositions and palatability of Barbonymus gonionotus for a period of three months (from April to June, 2021) in twelve cages set in a pond at the Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The study was conducted under four treatments with four feeds prepared by using vitamin-C at the rate of 0.0, 100.0, 200.0 and 300.0 mg/kg feed treated as T1 (Control), T2, T3 and T4, respectively. During this study, growth and feed utilization parameters viz., weight gain, SGR, survival rate and FCR of the fish were measured according to the standard methods. Flesh compositions by means of crude protein, lipid, carbohydrate, ash and moisture contents and palatability attributes by means of odour, taste and texture of cooked flesh of the fish were measured according to the method of AOAC and organoleptic scoring system, respectively. Significantly (p≤0.05) higher mean weight gain and SGR was recorded in the fish of T4 and T3 compared to T1 and T2. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in the survival rate among the treatments. The better FCR was found in T4 compared to other treatments. Significantly (p≤0.05) higher crude protein and lipid contents were recorded in the flesh of fish treated with higher level of dietary vitamin-C. Inclusion of dietary vitamin-C not significantly (p>0.05) enhanced the palatability of the fish but relatively higher total organoleptic scores of palatability attributes obtained from the fish treated with higher levels of vitamin-C (200 and 300 mg/kg feed). Overall study revealed that the inclusion of dietary vitamin-C in the commercial feed at 200 and 300 mg/kg feed had positive effects on the growth and FCR, flesh nutrients and overall palatability of B. gonionotus.
