EFFICACY OF PLANT EXTRACTS ON SEED GERMINATION AND SEED ASSOCIATED FUNGI OF TWO WHEAT VARIETIES

Abstract

The present experiment aimed to determine the antifungal effects of Adhatoda vasica, Tagetes patula, Vinca rosea, Lowsonia inermis and Andrographis paniculuta on seed germination and seed borne and seed associated fungi of two wheat varieties viz. Akber and BARI-Gom-26 in in vitro condition. Blotter method was performed to evaluate the efficacy of plant extract to enhance germination and controlling seed associated fungi of wheat varieties. The seed germination rate was up to 54.67% under the control condition, whereas under the treatment condition, it was up to 97.33% and which means that germination was enhanced 42.25%. The highest seed germination was recorded 97.33% at 1:1 dilution of L. inermis on the seed of BARI-Gom-26 variety. Bipolaris sorokiniana, Fusarium sp., Aspergillus spp., Trichoderma viride, Penicillium sp. and Rhizopus sp. were isolated from treated and controlled wheat seeds. Aqueous extract of L. inermis was observed most effective followed by A. vasica, T. patula, V. rosea and A. paniculuta in reducing seed borne and seed associated fungi. The dilution ratio 1:1 was most effective to eliminate seed associated fungi and increase germination rate than 1:3 dilution of tested plant extracts.
