Abstract

Bangladesh is one of the most riverine countries in South Asia. Padma is the largest river and a major part of it passes through Bangladesh. This paper aims to explore the issue of river bank erosion in Bangladesh, particularly in the Padma River basin. By using a combination of geospatial and socio-economic data, the study assesses the extent of erosion and accretion, changes in land use and its impact on livelihoods in the Harian union of Rajshahi District. Landsat images were analyzed using remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) techniques and socio-economic data were analyzed using SPSS. After data analysis, it is estimated that approximately 2091.37 hectares of river bank areas have been eroded and 549.35 hectares have been accreted over the past 16 years since 2005. To gather information on the socio-economic impact, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to conduct for household survey. A significant portion of respondents reported that river bank erosion has adversely affected their livelihoods. Moreover, the participants asserted that river erosion has caused extensive damage to agricultural land and other resources, leading to economic crisis and increased levels of poverty. Overall, the findings of this study shed light on the severity of river bank erosion in the Padma River basin, emphasizing its detrimental effects on livelihoods and the urgent need for mitigation measures to address this silent disaster in Bangladesh.
