FISHING GEARS AND CRAFTS UTILIZED BY THE FISHERS AT MATHABHANGA RIVER IN CHUADANGA

AbstractThe study was performed to determine the sorts of fishing gears and crafts, their availability, and their mode of operation in fishing at the river Mathabhanga during the period from August 2022 to July 2023. Data were obtained by key informant interviews, surveys, crosscheck discussions, and secondary researchers. A diverse array of fishing gear was employed within the study area, encompassing both conventional and region-specific methods. The selection of gear kinds, mesh sizes, and lengths depended on variables like the depth of the water body and the abundance of different fish species. A total of 4 types of fishing crafts and 18 types of gears were reported from the study area among them, fishing nets were categorized into 6 classes according to their mode of operation or how much fish they could catch including gill nets, seine nets, lift nets, purse nets, cast nets, and push nets. In nets, float and sinker were used which have been made from locally accessible materials; the underside of the net was composed of an alloy of iron and zinc. Four (4) types of fishing crafts were identified from this study area including dingi nauka, kosha nauka, donga, and raft (Vella). Traditionally, fisherman built their boats out of bamboo, irons, coal tar, burnt oil, and locally accessible woods such chapalish, telshur, mehe guni, rendi karai, and kali korai. The fishermen employed some of the government-banned gear, such as ber jal, current jal, and behundi jal which destroyed the fisheries resources indiscriminately. A public awareness and training initiative ought to be implemented for fishermen to promote the sustainable utilization of the fishery resources in the Mathabhanga River
