GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF COMMERCIAL POULTRY FARMING IN BANGLADESH WITH REFERENCE TO RAJSHAHI DISTRICT

AbstractThe main focus of the study was to explore the growth and development of commercial poultry farming in Bangladesh with particular to Rajshahi district. Data were collected from the concerned personnel with the help of interview schedule during June to July 2012. Secondary data were collected from the government documents, related literatures, books, journals, news papers and articles. It was observed that number of poultry population in Rajshahi district alone and throughout Bangladesh from 1999–2000 to 2009–2010 fiscal year was increased by 686 and 53% respectively. At the same time the number of poultry farms in Rajshahi and Bangladesh were increased by 752 and 136%, respectively. The collected data indicated that increase of meat and egg production in Rajshahi was 338 and 511% respectively the increase in meat and egg production in Bangladesh were 7.14 and 85% respectively. Consumption of meat and egg during the same period was increased by 94 and 84% respectively. It was found that the prices of main production input like day-old-chick and feed were increased by 80 and 125% in Bangladesh and Rajshahi respectively. At the same time prices of production output like meat and egg were increased by 87 and 75% respectively. The available information revealed that remarkable growth and development in poultry farming have occurred. Use of ready-made feed, high yielding poultry strain, modern vaccines, modern equipment, the organized marketing systems etc. have turned poultry farming into a modern industry. In the last 10 years (2002-2012), government initiatives for the production of vaccines were remarkable and Tk. 7892 million has been allocated through 144 development projects. All these growth and development indicate that poultry farming has a great prospect in Bangladesh.
