AbstractHeterosis and combining ability for filament length in silkworm Bombyx mori L. were investigated following line×tester crossing design in five rearing seasons. Although magnitude of heterosis varied from season to season, cross NB- 2×BSRI-95/14 showed significant positive heterosis over their respective mid parents in all the seasons. Considerable amount to heterosis was obtained in the crosses where parents BNP and BSRI-95/14 were involved as line and tester respectively. Parental performance as judged by general combining ability quantities indicated that BNP and BSRI-95/14 were better general combining parents in all the rearing seasons. The variance due to the specific combing ability (σ2 sca) was higher than the general combining ability (σ2gca) in all seasons, indicating the preponderance of non-additive gene action in inheritance of this trait. Very few crosses showed significant sca effects in positive direction were the resultant of one good combining parent. The hybrids, NB-2×BSRI-95/14 and BNP×HTHRB were selected based on heterosis, general and specific combining ability results for recommending to field trials for commercial exploitation.
