AbstractThis study aims to critically discuss the historical background of migration in Bangladesh. The findings suggest that both the external and internal processes have characterized the migrations in Bangladesh. Rural-urban migration remarkably happened in the post-independent period, though both the internal and external migrations were active from pre-colonial period to the recent Bangladesh period. Climate change, and religious, economic and political divisions in the Indian subcontinent were the main stimulating factors of migrations. External migration between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were mainly due to the fact of religious and political divisions. In addition, many Bangladeshis have migrated to South-east Asia and Middle-east for economic reasons. Internal population displacement was also happened as a result of climate change and natural hazards such as cyclone and river erosion. This study, however, presents a summary of internal and external migration patterns of Bangladesh.
