IMPACT OF PARTHENIUM HYSTEROPHORUS L. ON RICE SEEDLING GROWTH AND SOIL PROPERTIES

Abstract: An investigation was conducted to assess the impact of Parthenium hysterophorus L. on seedling growth of three rice varieties (BRRI-
28, BRRI-29 and BRRI-Swarna). At first investigation, Parthenium leaf extracts of different concentrations were applied to examine the germination and seedling growth of rice varieties under laboratory conditions and the second attempt was to check the effect of Parthenium leaf dust in soil pots on seedling growth of same rice varieties. At third step, Parthenium infested rhizospeheric soil from different depths were collected and tested for the soil properties. It was observed that BRRI-Swarna performed best in seed germination and root elongation at T1 treatment whereas shoot elongation and overall plant length were recorded maximum in BRRI-28 at T0 treatment after 10 days period. BRRI-28 and BRRI-29 showed more tolerance and vigorous growth to Parthenium extracts than BRRI- Swarna but the phytotoxic effect was more prominent in BRRI-28 than other two rice varieties. BRRI-29 showed inhibitory effect to Parthenium leaf treatments in germination efficiency at all periods. The percent inhibition in shoot length was more visible in BRRI-28 at all periods than other two rice varieties and on the other hand the root elongation of rice seedlings was not found to be affected by Parthenium extracts recorded at 7 and 10-day periods. The tested rice seeds were also checked by Parthenium dust in soil pots and observed that BRRI- Swarna performed the highest plant length than other two rice varieties at 10 days period. The seedling growth in soil pots indicates that BRRI-29 was better than BRRI-28 and BRRI-Swarna. It was also noticed that Parthenium dust in soil was not detrimental to rice seedlings growth. Parthenium infested and non infested soils were also tested and revealed that Parthenium infested on top soil increased organic matter and decreased at 6 inch depth soil with declined pH.
