AbstractThe present study examined the influences of socio-demographic factors on marital adjustment of women. In this study employment status (employed and unemployed), educational level and socio-economic status were used as socio-demographic factors. A total of 300 participants were purposively selected from different areas at Rajshahi city, Bangladesh. Subjects were equally divided into employed (150) and unemployed (150) women. Marital adjustment was assessed using the Bangla version (Khatunet al., 2019) of the Locke-Wallace Short Marital Adjustment Scale (Locke and Wallace, 1959),which is a standardized tool consisting of items assessing various dimensions of marital interaction. Socio-demographic factors was measured with the Bangla version (Huq, 1992) of the Socio-economic Status Scale (Kappuswamy, 1962). This scale takes into account education, occupation, and income to classify participants into low, middle, or high SES categories. Data were analyzed using correlation, regression, and t-tests. Findings indicated significant relationships between marital adjustment and employment status (r = 0.282, p<0.01), educational level (r = -0.581, p<0.01), and socio-economic status (r = -0.128, p<0.05). Regression analysis demonstrated that employment status, educational level, and socio-economic status had significant independent effects on marital adjustment, explaining 7.9%, 33.7%, and 1.7% of the variance, respectively. Further analysis revealed that unemployed women exhibited higher marital adjustment than their employed counterparts. Additionally, women with higher educational level reported better marital adjustment compared to those with middle and lower educational levels. Similarly, women from high socio-economic backgrounds showed better marital adjustment than those from middle and lower socio-economic groups. However, no significant difference was found between the middle and low socio-economic status groups. These findings offer valuable insights for improving the psychological and familial well-being of women.
