IMPACTS OF INTER-PARENTAL CONFLICT AND GENDER ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE CHILDREN

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the impacts of inter-parental conflict and gender on academic achievements of the children. A Bangla version (Uddin et al. 2013) of Grych et al. (1992) scale was administered to measure inter-parental conflict on a sample of 200 children, comprising 100 boys and 100 girls. The respondents were selected randomly from different schools of Rajshahi City, Bangladesh. The students were classified into three inter-parental conflict groups namely, high (above 75th percentile), medium (from 25th to 75th percentile) and low (below 25th percentile) on the basis of their obtained scores in inter-parental conflict scale. The experimental data were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA and t-tests. Results showed a significant difference among the three groups regarding academic achievements. Respondents from lower inter-parental conflict group were higher in academic achievement than those from higher inter-parental conflict group. Respondents from medium inter-parental conflict group had higher academic achievements than the higher ones. Results also showed that there was no significant difference in academic achievements between boys and girls.
