Abstract

The impact of honey on the silkworm, Bombyx mori was demonstrated with reference to the larval growth and economic parameters. The effect of honey were tested against 3rd, 4th and 5th instar larvae of silkworm for improving the larval growth and economic characters of the silk. The various concentrations of honey (2.5 ml./1000 ml., 5 ml./1000 ml., 7.5 ml. /1000 ml., 10 ml./1000 ml. and 12.5 ml./1000 ml.) were administered 3rd to 5th instar larvae of silkworm with mulberry leaves. A control set was also arranged separately. The larval growth, cocoon characteristics, fecundity and hatchability were influenced by various concentration of honey. The 10 mL (treatment 4) dose of honey was highly effective against the larval, cocoon and egg characteristics of B. mori. Results imply that supplementing mulberry leaves with honey has the potential to enhance the commercial qualities of silk and can be used in sericulture for yield improvement.
