LETHAL AND REPELLENT POTENTIALS OF THE AERIAL PARTS OF ABUTILON INDICUM (L.) EXTRACTS AGAINST THREE MAJOR STORED PRODUCT PESTS CALLOSOBRUCHUS CHINENSIS L., SITOPHILUS ORYZAE L. AND TRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM (HBST.) ADULTS

Abstract

Extracts of the aerial part of Abutilon indicum L. in Petroleum ether (Pet. ether), Chloroform (CHCl3) and Methanol (CH3OH), were subjected to dose-mortality and repellent activity tests against Callosobruchus chinensis L., Sitophilus oryzae L. and Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) adults. In the dose-mortality test against C. chinensis, the Pet. ether extract gave LD50 values 1.53, 0.95, 0.58, 0.46, 0.39, 0.34 and 0.32 mg/cm2 after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure; the CHCl3 extract gave LD50 values 15.49, 5.64, 2.45, 1.11, 0.71, 0.48 and 0.34 mg/cm2 after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure and the CH3OH extract gave LD50 values 1.00, 0.43, 0.25, 0.22, 0.15, 0.10, 0.08 and 0.07 mg/cm2 after 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure respectively. Against S. oryzae, the Pet. ether extract gave LD50 values 2.1, 1.67, 1.53, 1.49, 1.22, 1.10, 1.03 and 0.93 mg/cm2 and the CH3OH extract gave 3.88, 2.25, 1.90, 1.75, 1.67, 1.66, 1.57 and 1.52 mg/cm2 both after 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure respectively. Against T. castaneum adults, the Pet. ether extract gave LD50 values 7.54, 4.83, 4.75, 3.66, 3.53, 3.31, 3.25 and 3.20 mg/cm2 and the CH3OH extract gave 1.45, 0.61, 0.44, 0.28, 0.23, 0.18, 0.18 and 0.16 mg/cm2 both after 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure respectively. However, the CHCl3 extract did not show any lethality against S. oryzae and T. castaneum adults. According to the intensity of activity the A. indicum extracts could be arranged in the following descending order: Methanol extract > Pet. ether extract > Chloroform extract. In repellency test, the CH3OH extract showed significant repellent activity against T. castaneum adults at 5% level of significance. However, the Pet. ether and the Chloroform extracts did not show any repellent activity against any of the test beetles at all.
