LITHOFACIES ANALYSIS OF CHANNEL BAR OF THE PADMA RIVER GODAGARI TO CHAPAINAWABGANJ SADAR UPAZILA, RAJSHAHI DIVISION

Abstract

The study area is located at the Godagari-Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila of Rajshahi division. This study focuses on lithofacies analysis and its environments of deposition of the sandy bar along the Padma River. The bar comprises recent sediments of Quaternary period. On the basis of texture and sedimentary structures seven lithofacies have been identified in the study area. These lithofacies are trough cross stratified sand facies (St), planner cross-laminated sand facies (Sp), ripple and ripple cross-laminated sand facies (Sr), parallel laminated sand facies (Sh), laminated silt and silty clay facies (S1), parallel laminated alternated silt and clay facies (Fl) and massive bedded mud facies (Fm). The depositional facies sequence shows an overall fining upward sequence. These lithofacies are grouped into two facies associations namely (i) channel deposits and (ii) bar top deposits. The depositional facies association in channel deposits formed by lateral accretion indicates a falling stage of water flow in shallower part of active channels. On the other hand, bar top deposits are formed by vertical accretion signify that the sediments deposited due to decrease of flow velocity in the late stage of flow and/or flooding. The facies model suggests that the depositional sediments regimed by meandering river systems.
