Abstract

Morningness-eveningness reflects individual differences in circadian rhythms including sleep-wake timing, influenced by environmental factors like light exposure. This study aimed to test whether living environment (i.e., residence) affects morningness-eveningness and sleep habits in university students. A total of 1015 Bangladeshi university students (Females = 38%, Mean-age = 21.95 ± 1.95 years) responded to the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) and sleep habits related questions through an online survey. A chi-square test was used to determine the association between morningness-eveningness and residence, while a one-way ANOVA examined differences in morningness-eveningness and sleep habits among students from different residential backgrounds including rural, sub-urban, and urban areas. A significant association between morningness-eveningness and residence (χ2 = 19.03, df = 4, p = .001) was found. Findings also revealed a significantly higher level of morningness in rural students followed by sub-urban and urban students. Similarly, rural students reported earlier sleep-wake timing compared to sub-urban and urban students. This study highlights the differential effects of living environment on morningness-eveningness and sleep habits in university students, and finally suggests that increased urbanization may cause greater eveningness with delayed sleep-wake timing while rural environment can facilitate morningness.
