AbstractBangladesh is the motherland of rivers. The country is susceptible to bank erosion due to various hydro-climatic causes as well as non- cohesive soil characteristics in the river banks. River bank erosion is a perennial hazard in the northern Bangladesh. Every year river bank erosion causes of agricultural land losses, homestead damages, household asset damages and livelihood destruction of the riparian people of the Teesta basin. The present study tries to investigate the indigenous practices of the local people to tackle river bank erosion induced disaster. The purpose of the present research is to explore the local mechanism to cope with river bank erosion and thus survive in a fragile environment. Hence, the study result indicates that salvaging house building materials, wild vegetable collection, indigenous food making techniques, starvation, productive asset sell, borrow money and food products, migration for income generation, and search alternative livelihood have been practiced among the rural communities of the Teesta river bank to cope with recurrent bank erosion.
