NEIGHBORHOOD ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFE: COMMONALITIES AND DIFFERENCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES ACROSS SLUM COMMUNITIES IN RAJSHAHI CITY, BANGLADESH

AbstractAdequate access to basic environmental services like housing, water, sanitation and healthcare is inevitable for livable neighborhood environment that actually represents the quality of life. Notwithstanding inadequacy of these kinds of services are not a big problem in many developed countries, there is a large segment of urban populations in the developing countries does not have access to standard environmental amenities and healthcare facilities. This article relies on a series of indicators of neighborhood environment including housing, water, sanitation and healthcare facilities in the slums of Rajshahi city, Bangladesh. The focus is to explore commonalities and differences of neighborhood environmental services across the slum communities. The study has two objectives: first, to provide a better understanding about the environmental facilities and quality of life of the slum poor in Rajshahi city; and second, to illustrate whether all of the slums have equal access to environmental services or not. Based on a questionnaire survey, the study analyzes neighborhood environment and quality of life among three slum zones, which are: inner, middle and outer. It was assumed that the inner slums in the city have better service facilities and the dwellers enjoy better quality of life. The research finds that the slums of three zones have almost equal types of environmental and healthcare facilities, except housing.
