Abstract

The present study investigated relationships between perceived parental rejection in childhood and the current anger and social maladjustment of young adults. The sample of the study consisted of 130 respondents (65 males and 65 females) of under graduate students of different departments of University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Their age ranged from 19 through 24 years. Instruments used in this study were: (1) The Personal Information Form (PIF), (2) Bangla Version (Uddin 2011) of The Adult Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire: Father and Mother Versions (Short Form) (Rohner & Khaleque 2005), (3) Bangla version (Keya 2008) of Multidimensional Anger Inventory (Siegel 1986) and (4) The Social Adjustment Scale (Mahmuda & Parvin 2005). The obtained data were analyzed using correlation matrix and regression analyses. Results showed significant relationship exist between perceived parental (paternal and maternal) rejection in childhood and current anger and social maladjustment of young adults. Regression analyses revealed significant independent effects of both paternal and maternal rejection on the current anger and social maladjustment of young adults. Approximately 62.9% of variance in young adults’ anger and approximately 44.9% of variance in young adults’ social maladjustment could be explained by a combination of paternal and maternal rejection
