PHYSICO-CHEMICAL EVALUATION OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN THE SOUTHWEST COASTAL AREA OF SATKHIRA DISTRICT, BANGLADESH

AbstractThis paper deals with the physicochemical analysis of groundwater in the southwest coastal area of Satkhira district of Bangladesh where groundwater quality is very poor especially for salinity and peoples are facing drinkable safe water crisis. In this context, there are some important physical properties including pH, Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Temperature, Color, Tastes and Odors; and chemical properties including cations (Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+), anions (Cl–, SO 2-, HCO 2-, NO –) and some minor elements (Fe, Mn and As) have been analyzed to evaluate the groundwater quality. The well water generally show high values of EC, TDS, Na+, Cl– and HCO 2- to compare with WHO (2006) and DoE(1997) recommended permissible limit. Some physical parameters especially pH, color, odors, and chemical elements Ca2+, Mg2+, K+,NO –, SO 2- and Fe are not objectionable and did not exceed the WHO (2006) and DoE(1997) recommended permissible limit in most of the water samples. But Arsenic concentration is objectionable in a major percentage of the water samples which shows average 0.052 mg/l and 0.043 mg/l in pre and post monsoon respectively. Median pie diagram analysis shows that Na+> Ca2+> Mg2+> K+ and Cl—> HCO 2->SO 2-> NO – abundance major ions in groundwater of the area; From the result of Pearson’s correlation analysis observed that strong correlationwere found in Na+, Cl–, TDS, EC and SO 2- to each other in the collected water samples. The piper diagrams suggested the groundwater in the area mainly belongs to the Na++ K+– Cl–+ SO 2- hydrochemical facies. It was also found that Na+ and Cl– enriched ion in groundwater of the area.
