Abstract

Natural dyes are bio-degradable, eco-friendly and are almost free from hazardous chemicals. The study was conducted to extract the natural dye from the leaves of Polyalthia longifolia. The objective of this study is to determine the optimum conditions for extraction of natural dye. The parameters for the extraction were temperature, time and pH are optimized based on their optical density. The extraction of dye was carried out using four methods, namely- aqueous, acidic, alcoholic and alkaline medium. Based on the dye yield percentage and their optical density, alkaline extraction was chosen for the dyeing purpose. The optimum time for dye extraction was found to be 60 min at 90 ºC, and the dye yield and M: L ratios were 18% and 1: 10 respectively. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the plant leaves confirmed the presence of various phytochemicals in the extract, those were alkaloids, triterpenoids, tannins, saponin, anthraquinones, and glycosides. The results of the color fastness to wash properties of the dyed silk fabrics using different mordants were found to be good to very good
