PRESENT STATUS AND BETTER MANAGEMENT OF ORNAMENTAL FISHERIES AT RAJSHAHI REGION, BANGLADESH

AbstractThe study was conducted to identify the present status and better management of ornamental fishes of Rajshahi, Bangladesh for a period of January to October 2018 when only 8 aquarium shops were found in the heart of Rajshahi City. A total of 29 varieties of ornamental fishes were exotic or indigenous belonging to 8 orders Cypriniformes, Perciformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Siluriformes, Characiformes, Gymnotiformes, Cichliformes, Anabantiformes. Rosybarb, Bengal loach and Zebra fish are the most dominant. According to IUCN redlist (2022), the conservation status for the fishes are in not evaluated, data deficient least concern, near threatened, vulnerable, endangered categories were considered in this study. The price of ornamental fish ranged from BDT 38.33±4.41 to BDT 1500.00±0.00 per pair. The highest price is blood parrot (1000.00±0.00 to 1500.00±0.00Tk/pair). Discus fish (300.00±0.00 to 800.00±0.00Tk/pair) and Black ghost Knife fish (106.67±6.67 to 466.67±16.67Tk/pair). The most demandable fishes were gold fish, comet, koi carp, angel fish, platy, guppy, fighter fish, parrot fish and discus fish. Four different marketing channels were identified in ornamental fish trading. Modern technology in aquarium management was not been introduced yet in Rajshahi. Most of the ornamental fishes were imported by trader. Disease conditions of ornamental fishes were white spots, tail and fin rot, dropsy, mouth fugues and parasitic problems with 10% mortality. Health management strategies included heating and exchange of water continuous aeration, change in feeding frequency, and use of various types of drugs like aqua spot blue, fish vitamin, water care, 100 gold, methylene-blue, and salt.
