PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE BANGLA VERSION OF THE NATIONAL STRESSFUL EVENTS SURVEY FOR PTSD-SHORT SCALE (NSESSS-PTSD)

Abstract

The National Stressful Events Survey PTSD-Short Scale (NSESSS-PTSD) is a widely clinician used screening tool for DSM-5 PTSD that quickly diagnoses clinically significant PTSD symptoms. The aim of the current study was to translate the scale into Bangla and to assess its psychometric properties for the Bangladeshi adult people. To evaluate the reliability and validity of the scale both classical test theory (CTT) and modern test theory (IRT) approaches were used. Results of item analysis of the scale revealed good item discrimination indices in both CTT and IRT. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported the unidimensional model in terms of model fits and items’ factor loading. The scale level analysis demonstrated good internal consistency reliabilities (Cronbach’s alpha = .78 and McDonald’s Omega = .78) and test-retest reliability (r = .76). The Bangla version of the NSESSS-PTSD short scale has good concurrent validity. Considering these findings it can be said that this scale is a psychometrically sound measure to assess the prevalence of PTSD quickly among the vulnerable adult population of Bangladesh.
