RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND POOR SLEEP AND BLOOD SUGAR AMONG DIABETIC PATIENTS

Abstract

Depression, poor sleep and sleep disturbances can affect the patients with type-2 diabetes. The relation of quality of sleeping and depression with blood sugar among patients with type-2 diabetes was the main focus of the present study. This study was actually an observational and was performed at the Rajshahi Diabetic Association General Hospital, Rajshahi. Fifty seven percent of male and forty three percent of female participants with diabetes were taken into account to complete the study. Out of the patients 55.41% male and 56.36% female showed adequate or good sleep quality with sugar levels ranging 5-10 mmol-1 in blood and 44.59% male and 43.63% female showed poor sleep quality with sugar levels ranging 11-41 mmol-1 in blood after taking meal and 34% male and 24% female showed depression with sugar levels ranging 11-41 mmol-1 in blood. The correlation between male and female of poor and good sleep quality was statistically (p>0.05) insignificant. The age group, (47-57) years, showed the highest rate (35.08%) of sugar levels in blood (11- 41 mmol-1) and the age group, (25-35) years, showed the lowest rate (7.01%) of sugar levels in blood (11-19 mmol-1). The majority (44.18%) of the subject had scores indicating poor sleep quality. It can be concluded that chronic lack of sleep may contribute to the risk of type-2 diabetes. Adequate sleep or good sleep hygiene should be included among the goals of a healthy lifestyle, especially for patients with diabetes.
